Rotary Club offering free well tests to local residents

The Sweet Home Rotary Club, the Oregon State University Extension Well Water Program and Analytical Laboratories & Consultants of Eugene are partnering to offer free well water tests for Sweet Home area residents on Saturday, Feb. 3, and Thursday, Feb. 8, in conjunction with a well management class.

Water samples will be tested for nitrates, coliform bacteria, and arsenic.

Arsenic and bacteria testing are not normally done when the OSU Extension Service offers well water tests, due to the expense. However, the Sweet Home Rotary Club obtained a Rotary grant to help cover the cost.

"The Sweet Home area is one of the few areas in Oregon known to have widespread arsenic in groundwater supplying drinking water wells," said OSU Well Water Program Coordinator Gail Andrews.

"Since household well owners in Oregon aren't required to test their water, I'm concerned that many people in your area may be unknowingly drinking water with arsenic."

Free arsenic and coliform bacteria tests will be offered to the first 85 residents of the 97386 (Sweet Home), 97345 (Foster), 97336 (Crawfordsville) and 97329 (Cascadia) ZIP codes to sign up for the class.

Road rules get tougher in 2007

Safer from stalkers: The Safe at Home Law has been extended for five years to Jan. 1, 2013. This program allows victims of domestic violence or stalking to conceal their true addresses. The law also allows the DMV to continue suppressing records of victims' license and vehicle registration.— Data mine closed: Computer vendors and vehicle manufacturers will no longer be allowed to access personal information from a vehicle dealer's computer system that stores customers' private information without the dealer's consent. (This practice is known as data mining.)— Disabled parking: Nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physicians' assistants will be able to certify that someone is disabled and should get a disabled or a disabled veteran's placard. Current law allows only licensed physicians to certify a disability to obtain a placard.— Get off the phone and drive: A bill signed into law this year establishes that as of July 1, 2008, drivers may not use a hand-held cell phone.

Use Caution when it Comes to Cooking, Storing Food After Power Outage

Recent ice storms across central and northeastern Nebraska knocked out power to thousands early this week. For Nebraskans dealing with power outages, cooking meals, storing cold foods and making sure drinking water is safe are all priorities, said Julie Albrecht, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln food safety specialist.

No extra security for Thatcher visit

Hampshire Police have decided against taking extra security measures for Ben Thatcher's visit to Portsmouth with Charlton on Saturday.Thatcher was banned for eight matches earlier this season after he hospitalised Pompey's Portuguese midfielder Pedro Mendes with an elbow-led challenge in a match at Manchester City in August.

And he is sure to face a hostile reception from Portsmouth fans at Fratton Park after joining Alan Pardew's struggling side for 500,000 last week.

But the police force who cover Pompey's home matches believe a reinforced security presence would not be appropriate.

A spokesperson said: "We are aware of the circumstances but we are confident our standard procedure for Pompey matches will be sufficient to cope."

Mendes, who was put on a drip and faced several days of uncertainty over his football future after the clash with Wales international Thatcher, has already declined to make comment about the incident in the build-up to Saturday's encounter.
